Don H. Bumgardner was educated in the public schools of Gaston County, North Carolina. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a Morehead Scholar. He graduated with honors from the University in 1967. He is a 1970 graduate of the UNC School of Law.

Since 1970, he has practiced law in North Carolina with his offices located in Gastonia, NC.  His legal career has been that of a trial attorney only. In the first twenty years of his practice, Mr. Bumgardner handled all types of trial work from murder cases to malpractice cases. Since 1990, he has exclusively limited his practice to a civil trial practice which includes automobile cases, construction accidents, medical malpractice, products liability, and workers' compensation.

During his career, he has served as president of both the Gaston County Bar and the 27-A Judicial Bar Association. He is a sustaining member of the American Association of Justice and a Patron of the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers. He has been selected as an Advocate of the American Board of Trial Advocates which is a select organization of some the best Trial Lawyers in America who are dedicated to the right of the people to a trial by a jury of their peers. He has served as a guest lecturer and speaker at numerous seminars educating other members of the bar.
